Butterfly Encounter in Central Florida
There are many things we will never grow too old for, and one of those, is butterflies!! We certainly love nature, and the butterfly life cycle is one of the most naturally beautiful processes. The variety and diversity of the butterfly world is surely a marvelous sight. So, if you are looking for a butterfly encounter in Central Florida, Lukas Nursery is the place to visit.
Central Florida Butterfly Encounter

At Lukas Nursery, you can do the just butterfly encounter, or you can also do a guided field trip around the nursery grounds, with the butterfly encounter. We did the guided tour with our homeschool group.

Grounds Tour at Lukas Nursery
Our tour started off with some chicken talk. We owned our own chickens a couple years ago, therefore we knew most of what was being taught. The one thing we did learn…..did you know you can tell the color of eggs the hen will lay by looking at the color of skin on her ear? Crazy huh??? As much as you think you know, there is always more to learn.

As we walked over to the cows and donkeys, there were large majestic oaks. Oaks are like snowflakes. No two are alike, and their uniqueness makes them so beautiful. Also, pictures never do them justice.

We learned all about Thor, the bull, and his girlfriends. The cows are like mascots for the nursery.

As we headed back around the side of the pasture, we walked a gravel road with a cute little pond.

We learned about some of the local trees we have in Florida. There were a couple interesting things, like this one here is a cinnamon tree.

Did you know that a banana tree only harvests fruit one time? Once it produces fruit, there becomes a separate tree that grows from the original, then the cycle repeats.

Butterfly Presentation
After we walked around the pond, we headed indoors for a short talk about the life of a butterfly. They have a little classroom area inside the gift shop where they play a short video, and allow kids to ask questions.

Finally, we entered the area of butterflies and birds.
The Butterfly Encounter

We got to walk around and see all the birds and butterflies. Even saw a set of butterflies mating.

Others were just flying around, eating the nectar from the flowers.

There was an enclosed area where they put Powerade on the kids’ fingers. As a result, the butterflies would land and eat.

When the kids were all done, we were free to wander the gift shop and head out. It makes me happy to see my girls enjoy nature as much as I do.

Butterflies hold a special place in all our hearts because of my grandma, and their great-grandma. She has loved butterflies for as long as I can remember, and used to have them on her clothing, plus make crafts to highlight them.

I really love your pictures. That’s crazy the fact about how you can tell the color of the hen’s egg!
Thank you! I thought that was really crazy myself. Especially since we used to have our own chickens, and I read quite a lot about them.
I couldn’t believe it either. Seems like they would be tough to keep taking care of.
You definitely should visit one. They really are magical!!
We love chickens too. If they offered to hold them, mine surely would have. We miss having our own.
Wow that was unusual. I just wrote an extremely long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Regardless, just wanted to say wonderful blog!
